Christoph Irmscher is a Distinguished Professor of English and Director of the Wells Scholars Program at Indiana University Bloomington and a regular contributor of book reviews to the Wall Street Journal. His most recent book is Audubon at Sea, coedited with Richard King (University of Chicago Press). His essay is part of a longer work in progress inspired by old family photos.
